  1. Phyceiver Devices

A phyceiver device is a dumb network connection device, that does not contain any network control technology. Motherboards fitted with phyceiver devices require a motherboard chipset driver, rather than a network interface driver. In order to locate a driver for a phyceiver, it is necessary to find out the name of the motherboard chipset, rather than look for a network controller driver.

The ndiswrapper tool enables NDIS network drivers written for Microsoft Windows to be used, enabling support for hardware that does not have open source drivers. The wrapper works by implementing an application interface for NDIS allowing the Microsoft Windows driver to be dynamically linked to ndiswrapper implementation.

Devices that require NDIS drivers are classified as redband and are not recommended for purchase.
